Earl, good to see your SEO series still giving us good information. I need to take a look at Squidoo and hub Pages again. I guess I still have accounts, but haven't log in in a long time. More posting to do. But I know backlinks are important. Thanks for this post.

You got it Earl!

Getting relevant links from pages with high page ranking will definitely help your site in the rankings. While I too have heard that Google doesn't look at page rank the same way they used to, I still think it does come into play. Maybe not the same way or as much as it used to, but still important. (Just my personal opinion)

This is very powerful information for any web site owner, if they use it. Backlinks are important and like you said, it's not that hard to get them from good sites. One of the keys is using your keywords for the links, this is what really matters when linking.

Using the Web2.0 sites like Squidoo, hub Pages et al are a great way to get relevant links and you can control the actual anchor text.

Like you, Earl, I heard that pagerank is becoming less important in backlinks, but then those are just rumours - Google's very secretive about their true ranking algorythm. Nonetheless, it's very valuable to get backlinks from long-established authority sites with high PR because the engines are sending THEM a ton of traffic, some of which will follow the link to your site. In essence, you're 'borrowing' their expert status and siphoning traffic from the search engines by proxy.
